Spring break with my kids has gotten increasingly fun as they get older. Being a curiosity addict, it feels extremely legitimizing that I get to combine my passion for discovery with quality time with my children. There is no greater joy!
This spring break, while we started the trip in Paris to see family, we then went on a discovery journey to Bordeaux.
Discovery:
The center of Bordeaux is marked by what is referred to as 'gates', a stunning 15th-century construction.
Surrounding the city are plenty of quaint villages, the village of Vertheuil in particular houses one of the oldest standing monasteries in France, dating back to 1100. It is well preserved and has a magical feeling to it.
The wineries around Bordeaux are some of the finest attractions of the region. The Grand Cru houses, such as Lynch-Bages and Lafite Rothschild, are historic castles in their own right, but when you add their mastery in the ancient art of wine production to the equation, the cultural significance is magnified.
Another great (and very child-friendly) spot to visit that blends the ethos of wellness, flavor, and discovery seamlessly is the Caudelie Spa. I won’t go deep into this; just go to the website, and you will understand. Kids classes to make pastries and a sculpture park to run around while you get your spa treatments are all included.
Wellness:
I’ll keep this short. Cheese and wine are really good for you (in moderation) together, as per a quote from inimitable Nidhi Pandya (her book “Your Body Already Knows” has hacked life for me!) So while enjoying the break, I made sure to have the above-mentioned medicine every night, and I’ve never felt better. I missed Laroot, though, and I was happy to return to it the day I got home!
Flavor:
While in Bordeaux, we mostly ate at home at our amazing hosts’ house. There was one incredible dish that stood out to me, which was beautiful as it was very tasty; a tuna and lentil salad with beet-cured eggs. My trip ended right in time for Passover, followed by Easter, and as we know, eggs play a big role in both holidays. It is fair to say the tuna and lentil salad was a great entry into the Egg season.
